Finished Media Production!

Dear Moderator,
My name is Lauren Davies,
Candidate Number: 7028
Centre Number: 16829
I have now finished creating my media product and have evaluated it. I have blogged each step I have taken to create my final production work. I have placed my final front cover, contents page and double page spread near the top of my blog and the steps taken in order underneath. I have blogged my research and analysis' of other existing media products to help me gain a clear understanding of how a rock magazine should be set out and what should be featured in it. I have blogged all of the images that were used for my magazine and have shown how they were edited on photoshop. I have shown each step taken in the process of making my rock genre magazine 'PULSE'.

Final Double Page Spread!

I have now finished creating the double page spread for my magazine.

As you can see I went through with the idea of placing my 'Get to know' section in the left hand corner of the double page spread so that it did not take up too much room on the page and draw away too much attention from the main image. I edited the images to make the colours mour vibrant in order to make them stand out more. I made the female artists hair slightly brighter also to draw in even more attention to her. I included 3 images of my female solo artist on my double page spread to match the text. One large image and two smaller supporting images.

Again I have stuck to the same consistent housestyle by using the colours red, yellow, black and white so that the target audience can tell that these two pages belong to the same magazine as my front cover and contents page. I used the questions and answers interview to create the article to fill up these two pages. I also separated the text into different collumns to make the pages look well presented and organised. This also makes the text a lot easier to read.

Final Contents Page!

I have finished creating the contents page for my magazine. As you can see I have now included all the contents of my magazine. I decided to put the text into collumns to make the page look well organised and well presented and professional. I also separated the articles of the magazine into different sections such as 'Live Reviews' and 'News' so that the readers can easily select the type of article they want to read and are most interested in. This is something that I found a lot of rock magazines tend to do.
I have included inducements on my contents page to interest the readers. I have also used the inducements that were featured on the front page. This helps the readers to link the two pages together so you can easily identify that the two pages belong to the same magazine. I have used the 'FREE LARGE POSTER' and the chance for the readers to win free tickets to their favourite gigs. By doing this I can effectively attract the readers attention.
I have included the issue number underneath the contents heading so the readers can identify which issue they are reading which helps them to keep up to date. I have also included the magazines name (PULSE) on the page so the readers can get familiar with it and know what magazine they are reading.
I have used red stars to highlight important articles in the magazine to make them stand out. These highlighted articles were the ones featured on the front cover. Again this helpes the two pages link together. I have stuck to the same consitent house styles of red, yellow, black and white to make the magazine look professional and well-presented. I decided to only use one main image on my contents page as I felt any more images would have made the page look to crammed and would draw too much attention away from the main image and the actual contents of the magazine.

Final Front Cover!

I have finished creating the front cover of my magazine. As you can see there isnt a great deal that I have changed to it. I have stuck to the consistent house style and have only used the colours red, yellow, black and white to help the readers idenfity and recognise the genre of my magazine.
In the end I decided not to include another inducement on the front cover as I felt this would take up to much room on the page and would draw too much attention away from the main image as it would be covering a large part of it. The inducement I was going to include on the front cover was a chance to win free tickets to certain gigs, however as I did not feel this was a good thing to do on my front page I decided to include it on my contents page instead.

Another thing that needed changing was the barcode. When I first placed this on my magazine it was blurry and inclear so the readers would not be able to read it and identify what issue tha magazine was and the price of it which is very important so I researched a picture of a clearer and blank barcode and wrote the text in myself underneath. I also rotated the barcode as this allowed me more room for the writing to be larger and therefore easier to read. I also edited the main image to make the colours more vibrant and to draw even more attention to the celebrities eyes as this is a good way that rock magazines draw in the readers attention.

Get To Know Section!

On my double page spread I decided to include a 'Get To Know' box in the left hand corner of the pages. I included this again to help the readers get to know my female solo artist. By doing this the readers can feel like they know the celebrity well and will again feel like they can relate to them. It is important to give the readers a friendly feel to my magazine. In my get to know box I have included a few small facts on the celebrity that hopefully the readers will find interesting. To help me find what sort of things to put in this box and how I should lay mine out on the double spread I researched a few fact files from other rock magazines.
The first fact file I found was from the magazine Kerrang.
This factfile is based on the celebrities tract lists. I did not decide to set mine out like this as I wanted to focus on the actually celebrity, not their music.

The next fact file I looked at was from the magazine NME. This is also another rock magazine.
I really liked how this fact file was set out. It was also placed in the bottom left hand corner of the page which is where I originally planned to place my 'Get to know' section of the page. This fact file also focused on the celebrity themselves. It gave facts about the celebrities likes/dislikes. It also said the intruments that each of the band members play which I thought was an interesting fact to know about them. I decided to include this idea on my double page spread. I have included facts on the female artist's birthday and what instruments she plays. Here is a picture of my fact file.

As you can see I have stuck to the housestyle by using the colours red, black and white. This helps the readers to get familiar with my magazine and recognise the genre of it. I also thought it was a good idea to place it here as it was not taking up too much space and is not covering the main image.
It is vital that I used the same consistent housestyle throughout my magazine so the readers feel familiar with it and can recognise the genre easily as many rock magazines use these tense style colours. Also by using the same colours this helps to link and relate the different pages.

Creating My double Page Spread! - Interview

I decided to include an interview of my female solo artist on my double page spread. I wanted to do this so the readers can get to know the celebrity better and can relate to the magazine. Because of this I planned the interview to be friendly and fairly simple. I used a questions and answers style for my interview.
The interview was planned like this;
Q: So Luna a lot has changed for you in the past year, how are you finding this fame?
A: Yes my life has changed completely, for the good. I never thought I would get this far, I have my fan to thank for that. It feels like a dream that I never want to end.

Q: Do you miss what your life used to be like before all this fame?
A: Theres nothing I really miss. I still get to see my close friends and family a lot so thats all that matters. Although i do miss the privacy a little. Everyone Knows everything!

Q: We did hear that you're going to be touring next month?
A: Thats true, my first tour! I'm so excited! I get to go places I never thought I'd get the chance to.

Q: What else can Pulse expect from you in the future?
A: Well I've recently just released a new single called 'Open Your Minds' and once my tour is over I plan to start creating an album.

Q: Brilliant! We'll all look forward to that. So you have a huge fanbase already, most of these being males. Do you like all of this attention?
A: I love every single one of my fans. I've got where I am today because of them. Everyone loves attention. the other day a man sent me roses, which I thought was sweet.

Q: We've heard you're good friends with another great rock artist, Jared Leto? WOW
A: Yeah! He's like an older brother to me. He tought me how to play guitar and the piano. He also helped me to write a few songs.

Q: You're very talented! Will we be seeing you perform with him one day?
A:We have spoken about it, so maybe! We'll just have to see what happens.

In order to stick to the consistent house style I have used throughout the magazine I am going to be writing the Questions in white and the answers in yellow.

Also to make certain information stand out from the rest I will be enlarging the text and highlighting in red.

My contents Page so far!

Here is my contents page so far. As you can see I have decided to use white as my main background colour as this was something that I found a lot of rock genre magazines use, so by doing this the readers should recognise this idea and be able to identify that my magazine is based on the style of rock.
I have used the same housestyle as the front cover in order to make my magazine look well presented and professional. I have stuck to the colours red, yellow, black and white.
When planning my contents page, at first I wanted to cut the main image out so there was no background image just the plain white background. However I had difficulty doing this and when I tried to cut the female artist out the magazine looked plain and boring so I decided to leave the forest background. As you can see I have not yet finished the contents page as I still need to finish writing in all of the contents of my magazine. I will be using stars to make certain page numbers stand out. These articles will be ones that were featured on my front cover, this will show a clear link between the two pages of the magazine.

Reader's View Video!

In order to have a better idea of what exactly a reader wants from my magazine I put together a short video of a member of my target audience answering a few questions that I came up with to ask them. I wanted to know what they expect to see on a rock magazine and what they expect the content of it to be. As I am targeting a young audience I asked a teenage girl the following questions;

1. what kind of things would you expect to see on a rock magazine?

2. how would a rock magazine catch your attention?

3. What colours would you expect to see?

4. what else would stand out to you?

5. what's the maximum price you'd be willing to pay?
Below is a video of me asking the member of the target audience these five questions.

Now I have asked her these questions I have a clear idea on how I want to set out my final front cover. As the girl said she would like to see an inducement of a chance to win tickets as this would attract her attention and stand out, I am definitely going to include this offer on the front cover of Pulse. Also this video has shown me that I have chosen the right colours for my magazine so they do not need to be changed. Also I had chosen to price my magazine at around £2.20 so this is not far off of the price she said she was willing to pay.

Front cover of my magazine so far!

Here is a photograph of the front cover of my magazine so far.
I stuck to the original picture I was planning to use for the front cover of my magazine as I felt this shows the genre of the magazine well and the image of the type of person that Hayley Williams is. I cut the model out of the original background in the forest as I felt this didnt show the genre as well. I had difficulty doing so at first, but after a couple of tries I was able to cut my artist out and place her on to a white/grey background. The reason for me choosing to use this colour background is because most rock magazines use this idea so the target audience would recognise it straight away as a rock type magazine. I also stuck to the colours that were red, yellow, white and black for my magazine to create a good housestyle. I experimented with highlighting certain pieces of text to make them stand out more and make them clear and easier to read. I included a few inducements on the front cover like free posters however for my final front cover I feel it would be a good idea to add another inducement. This will be chances to win tickets to upcoming gigs. I have decided this as I feel this would attract even more reader attention to Pulse. Also the barcode is slightly unclear so I will try to make this clear so it is readable.

More Photos of my female solo artist!

Here are a few more photographs I have taken of my female artist.
The idea for this image came from a photograph I had found of Hayley Williams. I decided to make this image my own as my female artist is based on the image of this celebrity as she is someone that my target market are very likely to be interested in.

If i decide to use this image in my magazine I will be cutting the girl out in order to remove the background and place her onto a plain one.

I decided not to use this image as I did not like the facial expression as I did not feel it represented the genre of rock very well.

This is the photograph i am thinking about using on my double page spread. I got the idea of this image from the photo of Hayley Williams I have previously blogged. However I made the photograph my own by having the model hold her head. I like the facial expression as I feel it represents the genre as you would not see a picture like this in a pop or country magazine. However when I use this photo I may think about cutting the model out to remove the forest background.

This is the image I am planning to use on my double page spread also. If i was to use this one I would be using it as one of the smaller images located around the page. I will be editing each photo that I decide to use for PULSE.

Here I have photographed my artist whilst singing and playing the guitar.

Again a picture of my female solo artist playing her guitar.

For this image I tried to re-create a photo of Hayley Williams. However in the end I did not like the facial expression so decided not to use this image on my magazine.

This is the image I tried to re-create but also make my own.

Below you can see how I edited some of the images I wanted to use in my magazine.
Here is the original image. Iwanted to make the colours more vibrant in order to make the picture more interesting and eye-catching. I also needed to remove the date from the camera in the bottom right hand corner. This is the image I decided to use on my double page spread.

As you can see I have removed the date from the camera and have made the colours more vibrant and eye-catching, I have also tried to remove the sunlight off of the female artists jacket.

Photographs of my female solo artist!

I have now taken pictures of my female artist for my magazine. I will be using some of these pictures for my front cover, contents page and double page spread so it was vital that I took enough pictures of her in order to choose the best ones to place on each page. I dressed my female artist in black so that she could match the colours used in the magazine and create the image of rock. I dressed her in a way that the target audience would be interested in and their attention would be drawn to.

I started off by taking medium shot pictures and close ups of my artist that i would be hoping to use on my front cover. Most of these involved just simple pictures of her smiling just like the pictures iIfound of Hayley Williams. In these pictures there is a forest background as this is where the majority of my photos were taken so for the main image i had to cut the female artists out and place the cropped photograph onto a plain background. I had difficulty doing this at first but after a few tries i managed to do so.
If i was to use this image I would obviously be editing it to make it stand out more to the readers. I would be editing the eyes to make the colour more prominent, I would also do the same with her lips and hair. I would also be cutting her out so that there is no forest background so that it could be placed on a plain white/grey coloured background.

However I decided not to use this one as I didnt like the fact that her head was facing more to the right, I wanted a picture of her facing the camera more.

This next photograph that was taken was exactly how I wanted my female artist to be positioned. In this photo you can see she is facing the camera more and looking directly at it which is what I had planned that artists to do as it makes you feel like she is looking directly at you which will catch reader attention.

This is the photo I have decided to use for my main image as I feel this relates to the rock genre and clearly shows it. This is because she is wearing the types of clothes that the target audience would be interested in and these are also the types of clothing that many other rock artists wear (dark clothing).

Here are a few more images I photographed of my artist.
I really liked this image however I felt this picture was too 'smiley' for a rock magazine and was more likely to be used in a pop type magazine. Rock magazines dont usually have their models smiling too much.

Again for the same reasons as one of the previous photos I did not use this as the model was facing away from the camera.

I also liked this photo as the model was facing the camera directly and you can clearly see that the clothing the artist is wearing is suitable for the rock genre. I may decide to use this on my double page spread. If I did decide this i would again crop her out leaving out the background.

Before taking more photos of my female solo artist I decided to take a couple of pictures of the group of people that would pose as my rock band called The Mondays. These are a rock band that dress slightly 'Geeky' to be unique with their clothing and style, however they are still a ROCK band.

This is the photo I decided to use for the band The Mondays. However there were a few changes I want to make with this photo. I will remove the drawn on black spots on the member's cheeks and I will cut them out so I am able to place them on a plain background.

Another image I took for the Mondays was a picture of one of the band members that I am considering using for the contents page.
This is the image I decided to take of one of the band members from The Mondays. Above is the original image. Below I have removed the drawn on black spots and changed the artists hair colour to make her fit the genre even more. I may be using this on my contents page to represent the article of the band she belongs to.

Looking at other existing artists for inspiration!

Before taking photos of the models or my magazine I decided to look at existing celebrities to help me create the image of my solo artists and other members featured in my magazine. I wanted to create artists that my target audience are likely to be interested in. I researched artists that have been featured in other rock magazines such as Kerrang and Q to help me decide what body langauge they should use and how to position them in my photos.

The first artist I looked at was Hayley Williams from the band paramore. I looked at this particular artists to help me out with my solo female artist that is going to be featured on my front cover, contents page and double page spread.
The first few images I looked at were,
From the smaller image Hayley is looking directly at the camera which is something I will want my solo female artist to be doing for the main image on my front cover. This is so that the audience is drawn to the celebrities eyes and they can feel like they are looking directly at them. She also has bright red hair and is wearing black, this creates the image of rock as these two colours are featured a lot in rock magazines as I found out from my research on magazines. I will want my solo artist to also be wearing black. Also the person I am planning to photograph for this has red hair. In all of Hayleys photos she seems to either be smiling or pulling another face, this is what I will be making my female artist do. I will have a few pictures of her smiling and the rest will be 'crazy' faces. These types of images are used a lot in other magazines such as Kerrang.

Here is an image of her pulling a crazy face. This image was used in a Kerrang issue. This is the type of thing I will be getting my artists to do as I feel it would interest the reader and show what type of artist she is. This also shows what type of magazine it is as this type of image would not be found in a pop or country magazine as they use much more calm images. I will be getting my model to pose like this however I will make it my own image by maybe getting her to hold her head.

As I wanted to include a band photo on my front cover I needed to look at band pictures to help me understand how to position them. For this again I looked at the band paramore. I noticed that in most band pictures each member is positioned very close to one another. Usually a few members are further more backwards than others as you can see in the photograph below;

Branding!

Before creating my magazine, I needed to think about BRANDING. Branding and the readers relationship with my rock magazine is very important. I need to make my magazine influence the readers and persuade them into buying it. It is important to make a good relationship with the readers so that they can feel they relate to it and the celebrities featured in it in some way.

One way in which I can do this is through typography. This involves using the text, font and colours to attract the readers attention. As I want to attract people that like rock music I will not be using light and calm colours like pink and green I will be using intense colours that are usually associated with rock, these are yellows, reds, black and white. This will help me to attract the right target market. I will also need to make sure that the content of my magazine suits the target audience. I wont be taking about music from a different genre I will need to make sure all information relates to the idea of rock. This will keep the readers interested in the articles featured in my magazine as i am providing them with the type of content they are interested in and want to read. By including interviews with the solo artist this will also help create a relationship between the reader and the magazine as they will feel like they are getting to know the celebrity with the magazine. They will feel like they are involved in the interview.

Sketched draft of my double page spread!

Finally I have created a sketched draft of my double page spread. This is what I hope it will look like.
My double page spread focuses on an article on my female solo artist 'Luna Heart'. It will include a small fact file on the celebrity and an interview with her. This will help the readers get to know her well. As my target market will be fans of this artists I will need to make sure I am providing them with everything they want to know about her, thats one of the reasons why I am including the fact file. The interview will be a Q & A interview.
I am planning to have one large image featured on the left side of the double page spread and then a few small images located all around the page. I will be separating the interview into about three collumns to spread the text out so it is easy for the readers to read and isnt all crammed together so it is unclear.

Here is a picture of what I want my final double page spread to look like;

A sketched draft of my contents page!

Now I have a clear idea of what I want my front cover to look like I have created a draft for my contents page.
For my contents page I will be including pictures of two different artists, one being the solo artist I used for the main image on my front cover. This artist I will also be using for my double page spread as she is the type of solo artist my target audience are likely to be most interested in.
From the analysis of the previous contents pages I looked at from magazines such as Kerrang and Q I have decided to set my contents page out into different sections so it makes it easier for the readers to read. Also this makes the magazine look well structured and organised which also makes it seem professional. Also by doing this it makes it easier for the readers to find the type of article they are wanting to read.
I stuck to the same consitent housestyle again. However on my draft there are a few things I may change. For example where some text is highlighted black I may like to change this to yellow. I will do this to see which looks better and makes the text easier and clearer to read. The colour red also relates to my solo female artist as she has bright red hair so this creates a good effect. I have also included some of the inducements on my contents page, these being chances for the readers to win tickets and free posters.

Here is my sketched draft of what I hope my contents page will look like once it is finished;

A sketched draft of my front cover!

To plan how I was going to set out the front cover of my production I have sketched a draft of what I want the magazine to look like. I will be doing the same for the contents page and the double page spread.
One my front cover I have decided to have the main image as my female solo artist. She will be the main focus of the rock magazine. I have based the look of my artist on an existing celebrity named Hayley Williams. She is a member of the band paramore. Even though she is not a solo artist I still decided to make my model similar to her as she is the type of artist that my target audience will be interested in. I have named my female artist Luna Heart, this is a unique name which would hopefully draw in a lot of attention. My female artists is not the only celebrity I am including on my front cover, I will also be including a band I have named The Mondays. This adds even more interest to the magazine as the target audience are provided with a number of articles on different artists. I have included inducements such as free posters and I will try to come up with a few more in order to attract a lot of reader attention to Pulse.
I have created a good housestyle by only using  yellows, reds, black and white colours for the front cover, I will do this throughout the magazine. This makes it look structured well and more professional.

Here is the draft of what I hope my final production will look like;

Magazine Pitch!

Once I had finished the research for my magazine it was time to pitch my ideas. By doing this I can clearly set out the plan for my rock magazine. My research has helped me to get a clear idea on how my contents page, front cover and double page spread has been set out.
However there was one more small bit of research I wanted to carry out to help me decide on a name for my magazine. To help me decide this I looked at the existing names that have been used for this type of genre magazine..
The names I found were;
  • Q
  • Kerrang
  • NME
  • Rolling Stone
  • Mojo
  • Clash
What I realised about each of these was that all are very short and simple and relate to the genre of music in the magazine. The first name I considered was 'LOUD' as rock music tends to be very loud when played. However I did not feel this would interest the readers as much. The final name I came up with was Pulse. I felt that this related to the rock genre as all rock songs have a particular pulse and beat. I also stuck with this name as it is catchy, short and simple, just like the existing magazine names.

The genre I have chosen to focus my magazine on is Rock. This decision was made for a number of reasons. This is the type of music I am most interested in and therefore I felt by choosing rock this would work to my advantage as I would have an idea on how to attract the target audience as they will be similar to me and will enjoy the same type of music. I did think about creating a country magazine but once i had carried out my research I realised I didnt like the way in which these magazines were set out and didnt find them as interesting as the rock magazines.

The house style I have decided to use are the colours red, yellow, black and white. I have chosen these colours as most rock magazines use these consistent colours to attract their audiences. These would clearly show the genre of the magazine as this type of audience reading the rock magazines would recognise this particular house style. I will be using the same colours for my front cover, contents page and double page spread.

The target audience for my magazine would obviously be people that are interested in this particular type of music (Rock) as I will be focusing my articles on celebrities that produce this genre of music. I will need to make sure that the celebrities I include in my magazine are ones that the target audience are going to be interested in. I will also be aiming my production at a fairly young audience.

In order to be able to understand what the readers are going to want from my magazine I needed to create a small profile of them to find out the artists they like and dislike. To find this out I used the internet and asked a few people that fit into the target audience I want to attract.
Likes; Paramore, My chemical Romance, Enter Shikari, Bring me the Horizon, Lost Prophets
Dislikes; One direction, Justin Beiber, Beyonce, Bruno Mars
From this I can see the types of artists I should include in my magazine and the ones I shouldnt in order to attract the readers interest. I want to make sure the magazine targets all of the audiences interests and that they enjoy what they are reading.

The types of images iIam going to be using will be focused on solo rock artists. I will be thinking about using a female and a male artist in order to include both genres. I will also include pictures of the public to show the celebrities fans. I will be using a main image of my female solo artist for the front cover of the magazine.

For the double page spread I will be mainly using images of my female solo artist. The male and other female artist I will be including in my magazine will mainly be featured on the contents page and small images of them may be included on the front cover around my main image. On my double page spread I will be including an interview with the celebrity. This will hopefully create reader interest and will make them feel like they know the solo artist.

The type of inducements I will be using will be ones such as free posters of the celebrities included with my magazine, special offers on new albums coming out and the chance for the readers to win tickets to gigs coming up in the year. To make these inducements stand out I will use buzz words.

Researching Double page spreads!

Now I have researched contents pages and front covers I need to look at double page spreads to get an idea on how they should be set out and what I should include on mine. I will be analysing the contents pages of the same rock magazines Kerrang and Q.

The first double page spread I looked at was from Kerrang Magazine. The large image of this band member is the main part of this double page spread however a lot of room has still been left for the article. I want my target audience to enjoy the article I include in my magazine and I feel a way I could ensure this would be to set my double page out similarly to this one by using large images as the key focus. This would also help to draw in the readers attention. This magazine has also included an interview with this celebrity which is something I want to include on my double page spread to make up the article and to make the readers feel like they were involved and to help them get to know the celebrities featured in my magazine better. However this celebrity is looking down whereas in my photographs i want to focus on the body langauge and facial expressions on the celebrities to express the genre of my magazine effectively.

The next double page spread was taken from Q magazine. Again the magazine has used large images to draw in the readers attention to the article which is something I wish to do with my final production. Similarly to the previous magazine even though large images have been used there is still plenty of room for the article. On my magazine I want to use a variety of images to give the readers a straight away clear idea of the content of the article on these two pages. By using these images Q helps its target audience identify straight away that the article is going to be about the band shown in the photographs.

The next double page spread I analysed was taken from the magazine NME. This magazine focuses  a lot on the image that has been used. The image of the female artists links well to the background of the two pages and the content of the article.
The female artist is sitting on what appears to be the american flag and 'USA' has been written in the background. Also the way that the clelebrity has been positioned gives her power and gives the impression to the readers that she is powerful. The way she has been photographed makes her seem slightly larger than normal which gives the idea of power. Also the colours that have been used here link to this idea as the colour red symbolises the idea of passion and in this issue power also. When photographing my female artist I will think about this idea and how I will link them to the article and its contents.

The research on the double page spreads has shown me that each rock magazine focuses  a lot on the images it uses for these two pages. Therefore I have decided to use a number of images relating and linking effectively to the article in order to make my magazine look well resented and to catch the target audiences attention.

Researching 2nd contents Page!

Now I have researched one contents page I have looked at another to compare the two. The magazine i have chosen to compare with Kerrang is CLASH. This magazine is a bi-monthly magazine that has been aimed at 18-26 year olds. The magazine focuses on a range of genre such as ROCK, dance, hip-hop etc.

As CLASH magazine focuses on a variety of different Genres such as rock, hip-hop etc it is targeting a very large audience. You can clearly see that this magazine is targeted at a slightly older age range than the previous magazine I looked at (Kerrang) by the way it is laid out. The information has been clearly laid out into different collumns which makes the magazine look organised well and gives the readers the impression that the magazine is very structured. The way this magazine is structured reminds me of how a newspaper is set out. This shows that clash is aimed at an older, more mature type of audience whereas magazines like Kerrang and Q are targeted at a less mature and younger type of audience. I will be aiming my magazine at a similar audience to these magazines so I wont be setting my contents page out similarly to CLASH as they are targeting a different type of audience.

Similarly to Kerrang, CLASH uses a lot of images on its contents page to support the articles included in the magazine. The images have also been used to represent the artists of the different types of genre in the magazine, this also gives the readers an idea of the type of magazine clash is. As Kerrang and Clash both use a lot of images on their contents pages I will be doing the same for my magazine as this is a good way to attract reader attention and to create interest.

A way in which this magazine attracts reader attention is through their 'buzz' words and special offers. On CLASH's contents page they give the readers the offer of 'free music downloads'. I will be including things like this on my contents page in order to draw in the attention of my target audience.

Researching Contents Pages!

Now I have analysed the front covers of rock and country music magazines I will look at the contents pages of these magazines to help me produce my own. As I have decided to go through with the rock genre idea I will be focusing my research now on this particular type of music magazine. I analysed the front cover of Kerrang therefore i will be analysing its contents page to see how both relate to one another.
The first thing  you can notice when looking at this contents page is the amount of images that have been used. There is one main image and several other supporting images that illustrate the contents of this magazine. The main large image has been used again to draw in the readers attention and to relate to the contents of this issue. These images also show what type of magazine it is as they are photographs are 'rock bands'. The main image has been used as the target audience of this magazine are likely to be interested in the band that has been photographed as Kerrang targets the readers that like this style of music. Therefore this image would be adding interest which would influence the readers to want to find out what is written about this band in the magazine.
The smaller supporting images located around the page have been placed next to the text that they are illustrating. One of these images is of the celebrity named Gustav Wood from the rock band young guns, his name and page number have been placed just above the image to make it clear that this photograph is representing this text. The supporting image is related to the article involving an interview with this celebrity. By having a picture of him and an interview this gives the reader the impression the magazine is showing off a friendly approach with the celebrities and the readers. Kerrang is helping its readers get to know the band members to make them feel more familiar with them. When I come to produce my contents page for my final production i will be using a lot of images to support the articles, draw in reader attention and to add more interest.
Kerrang has placed the magazine's name in the middle of the page to relate to the front cover. This is making the name of the magazine stand out to the readers, and by having it written more than once in the mag this is making the readers become more familiar with the magazine and will make them recognise it.
Like the front cover of Kerrang the magazine has used a consistent housestyle and has mainly used the colours black, yellow, red and white. This makes the magazine look professional and well presented, and also makes the two pages relate to oneanother. By using the same colours on the contents page this helps to support the front cover. Also, the same style fonts have been used for the text. All of the writing is clear and easy to read and has been placed into different collumns on the page to seperate the types of articles included.
Ways in which the magazine has made certain texts stand out is by highlighting the groups of the articles. For example the words 'FEEDBACK' and 'ALBUM REVIEWS' have been put into a different colour font than the rest of the text and have been highlighted black. This makes them stand out so the readers are able to easily identify the type of article they wish to read first. When producing my magazine I will use this idea to make certain words more dominant than others. By placing the text into different collumns this makes the information easily accessible to the readers and shows them that the magazine is fairly organised which makes it seem more professionably laid out.
Another way that the contents page grabs the readers attention is by including the special offer of having the magazines delivered to the target audiences house for a reasonable price. All of this information has been placed in a black box at the bottom right hand corner of the page, this is supported by a few images of the actual magazine. Some of the text has also been highlighted in red, by using images and highlighted text this is making the special offer stand out to the readers. Also when the readers turn the front cover page this will be one of the first things they will see as it is located on the right hand side.

Researching Magazines!

Now I am focusing on my portfolio I need to create a pitch fro my production of a music magazine. Before I write up my pitch I will carry out some research on other existing magazines to help me plan and create mine. I will look at how the front cover, contents page and double page spreads are all laid out and the type of things included on them. I will need to analyse the images used, the text, layout of the pages, langauge and contents etc. This will help me decide what to include on my magazine. From my research I hope to learn what a music magazine should look like and how it can attract the targeted audience.

Firstly I needed to think about the type of music magazine I wanted to produce, the options I could choose from were, classical, Rock, pop, country or Western. I narrowed my options down to Country and Rock as I wasnt sure which type of magazine I wanted to product just yet as they both seemed very interesting. To help me decide I started researching both types of magazines to see which type I would prefer to base my magazine on. To begin my research I wanted to focus first on the front covers of the two types of magazines (Country and Rock)....

The first magazine I looked at was 'Kerrang' this being a 'Rock' music magazine.
One of the first things I noticed when looking at this magazine was the main image and the focus that has been put on the eyes of the celebrity. This magazine has drawn the attention of the reader easily onto the eyes of the main image. This is not the only image that has been used for the front cover of Kerrang, located on the lower section of the magazine are a few small images that illustrate the contents of the mag.
This edition of Kerrang has included a poster to add interest to the magazine and to attract reader attention. They also use words such as 'Huge' and 'Win' to draw in the target audiences attention. These have been made bold and are a slightly larger font that the rest of the text so that they stand out. I will think about using these types of words to try and catch my audiences attention.
The magazine mainly talks about upcoming gigs and celebrities with comebacks and life stories. For my magazine I will think about interviewing my models that I will photograph as celebrities in my magazine.
The genre of this magazine has been made very clear as the front cover is focused on rock bands such as 'My chemical Romance' and 'Foo fighters'. So when producing my magazine I will need to use this idea and inlcude images of my rock bands to make it clear to the readers what kind of music magazine mine is.
Kerrang also uses a good consistent housestyle. It mainly uses the colours, white, red, yellow and black, this makes the magazine look well presented and professional. This also makes the text easy to read and clear. For my magazine it is important that i stick to a consistent housestyle to make it look professional and well presented. I will also be using a consistent font to make the writing clear to read.

I have now looked at the front cover of another rock magazine to see if they use the same ideas as Kerrang. This will give me even more of an idea on how a rock magazine should be set out and how mine should be laid out and what it should include. The magazine i researched was 'Q'....
Again this rock magazine uses one main image and my attention is drawn to the eyes of the celebrity.
This magazine uses the same ideas as the previous rock magazine I looked at to attract the attention of the readers. They use the word 'FREE' to straight away draw in the attention and interest of the targeted audience. They also have placed this text in a small red bubble in order to make it stand out. When creating my magazine i will consider using shapes to make my text stand out and to add interest.
Again Q has a very good housestyle as it has mainly used the colours red, white and black. These seem to be very popular colours that are used by many rock magazines so I have decided to use these colours for mine.
The background colour used for this magazine seems to be very similar to Kerrangs. Both are very light which makes the main image stand out even more. I will use this idea for my production piece.
They have used this image as it is a photograph of one of the band members of the Foo fighters. They magazine have used this as the contents of the mag includes an issue on this celebrity and his band. So this image is illustrating the contents of the page and links to the text on the mag 'FOO Fighters, dave grohl saves rock, again'. For my magazine i will be including images that also relate to the contents and text of the magazine. The magazine has included many different names of other celebrities to attract in the readers attention. The celebrities are being represented here. By having their names included on the front cover this shows the reader what is going to be in the magazine. Q is clearly targeted to the readers that are interested in this kind of music and these artists. On my production I will create names of artists that i can include in my mag.

Now I have analysed the front covers of two rock magazines, if i do decide to go through with the idea of making a rock magazine instead of a country I now have more of an idea on how i would set it out. I now understand how rock magazines try to add interest to their front covers and how they attract the attention of their readers. Not only do they use their images to draw in attention they also use words.
The words I will try to include on my magazines will be FREE and WIN! I have decided this as both of the rock magazines i looked at used these words.
I would also be using a main image as well as a few small ones that i will place around the main image to add interest and to illustrate the contents of the mag. I will also focus on the housestyle and text of the front cover.

Before i decide to stick to producing a rock magazine i have looked at the front cover of a country magazine to see if i would prefer to create a magazine like this. The country musuc magazine I looked at was Billoard.

Straight away I could notice that this magazine was not at all like the other previous rock magazines I researched. On this magazine there is not as muhc going on. The front covers of both rock magazines seemed to include a lot more images and text. Because of this, this magazine did not interest me as much as there was less to look at and there are no really eye catching images or pieces of text.
This country magazine doesnt use any eye-catching or 'buzz' words.
The coverlines and text of the Billboard are located all over the place on this mag.
However this country magazine uses good housestyle as the text is the colours that are used for the masthead of the magazine. On 'Billboard' the colours red, blue and yellow have been used, so some of the text has been made these colours also which makes the magazine look well presented.
Instead of using a colour for the background this magazine has used a background image that has been blurred to make the main image stand out. I prefer the plain background colour idea that is used for the rock magazines as i feel it draws in more attention to the main image.
Now I have researched how the front covers of both rock magazines and country music magazines are laid out I have decided to go through with producing a rock music magazine as i feel i will be able to produce this better as i already have a few ideas on how i will set mine out and what sort of text and images i should include from looking at kerrang and Q. I found the ways in which they grab the readers attention very interesting and noticed these straight away, however when i looked at the country magazine i thought this was slightly less interesting to look at and there were no real eye-catching images or words.

Contents Page!

I have finished the contents page for my preliminary task. I am still getting used to using photoshop as I am still experimenting with the different tools on the program. In the future when I go on to producing my music magazine for my portfolio I will be using images with plain backgrounds. For one of the images I used for my contents page you can see the doors and fire exit behind the person photographed, I feel this makes the magazine look less well presented and upropfessional.

Front Cover of School Magazine!

I have produced the Front cover of my school magazine for the preliminary task.

I have mainly used the colours red, gold and white for the front cover in order to create a consistent housestyle. I chose to use these colours as these are the main colours of the school logo. This makes the magazine look well presented. I have clearly targeted the magazine to the new students that would be attending this school as I have included the selling line of the magazine that states it is '' A guide for the new students attending''.

As I am still trying to get used to using photoshop I still found it fairly difficult to use, however as I am using the program a lot more I am gaining more experience with it and am still experimenting with using different tools. I now find it easier to move images around and smoothen the edges, when producing the nature magazine I struggled with this, however now I feel more confident with it.
